Brief History About Dean Mac Sports
Welcome to the home of African Motorsports. The 1997 motorsports was at the peak in many African countries if you compare to the current standing of entries.
For example Ugandan motorsports peaked with the arrival of Emmanuel Katto with a bang who bought one of the most expensive rally cars in the region, a Toyota Celica GT4 ST185 Group A. The other two in the region were owned by one rally legend in Uganda, KARIM Hirji, which he used to ‘terrorise the rest of the competitors.
The second rally car of this magnitude was in Kenya owned by the son of the Kenyan president, arap Moi, by the name of Toroitich. These were the best machines money could buy at the time. Coming from World Rally championship drivers like Didier Auriol and Carlos Sainz. In the east African region there were more than 120 rally cars between Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda. Satwant Singh was the name I first heard of in the African championship having by this time won the title more than 5 times. There was no good following of the championship by the fans. From my observation there was no inter African following of motorsports. What was happening in Tanzania was not known in Uganda and vice versa .South African rally was highly regarded but people in East Africa couldn’t name two top drivers in the championship.
I thought there was a chance to build a platform for information exchange. So after entering the Uganda rally scene that year of 1997, Dean Mac Sports was soon on the way to Kenya for safari rally world rally championship with buses full of Ugandans who went to support the new kid on the block Emmanuel Katto and veteran driver Karim Hirji driving similar cars. I remember we were deep in countryside after 1 a.m. in morning waiting for the Ugandan maestros who four hours behind the leading cars. We were not disappointed as Katto finished 7th behind top world names , 1.Colin Mcrae SUBARU WRC,2. Richard Burns, Mitsu Evo 4 3.Ian Duncan ,Toyota Gt4 St205 4.Armin Shwarz,Ford Escort WRC 5.Jonathan Toroitich,Toyota Celica Gt4 St185, 6.Fredrick Dor Subaru Impreza 555 7.Emmanuel Katto Celica Gt4
